New Orleans: Being a tourist in your own City
October 8, 2009
I decided this past weekend that I wanted to put a nice “New Orleans-y” logo at the top of this blog. I had in my mind that I wanted to write out the blog title “The New Orleans Life” in street tiles that can still be found at the corners of many intersections in the city. So, I set out to spend the afternoon taking pictures of street tiles, and just pictures in general, that I may be able to use later for who knows what. Little did I know that my “quick” trip would turn into an afternoon of being a tourist in my city!
As I began my adventure driving down St. Charles Avenue, I passed Holy Name of Jesus Church, and the infamous Audubon Park. As I kept driving I stopped at a red light, and looked to my right. It was a long sidewalk lined with beautiful trees and landscaping, and not a vehicle in the street. So I pulled over to take a picture, when suddenly I saw an old-time Roman candy cart coming down the street. It was being pulled by a truck, unlike the old days where it was pulled by horse, but, nonetheless, it was quintessential New Orleans. I snapped a quick shot, and I was on my way. As I wound through the streets of Uptown New Orleans looking for street tiles, I made my way into the Garden District. I couldn’t help but notice just how beautiful the homes are there. I mean, I always knew they were there, but never really stopped and just took a closer look.
I continued on my journey, stopping to take a picture of one of the famous New Orleans Water Meters, and also taking a quick stroll through Lafayette Cemetery on Washington Avenue to snap a couple shots of a row of tombs. Afterwards, I headed back up to St. Charles Ave, to grab some pictures of the streetcar. I was in luck that one was passing right as I got there. I then began moving towards the downtown area, stopping at coliesum square park, again looking for interesting pictures to take.
As I headed down Camp Street, I passed the World War II museum, the Confederate Museum, and Lafayette Square – a great place to relax and just take in the downtown area. Lafayette Square is also home to Wednesday at the Square – a summer concert series. I hooked a right onto Poydras and headed towards the river. I thought to myself, “what a great picture it would make to see the city from the river.” So, I navigated past Harrah’s and the World Trade Center, and found a parking spot. I enjoyed looking out onto the river from the Plaza D’Espanal as I waited for the Algiers Ferry, to take me out onto the might Mississippi and get a glance of the New Orleans skyline.
Riding the ferry(one of the few things that is truly free) is a great way to get a picture of most of the skyline of New Orleans. I say most, because you can’t exactly see the Superdome from there, but there is alot you can see. Being out in the middle of the river, you can see the GNO Bridge, the Riverwalk, the St. Louis cathedral, the aquarium, etc. And, on a nice cool, sunny day, a ferry ride can be very relaxing.
After taking several pictures, it was time to call it a day. I got off the ferry, and headed back to my truck, hearing the sounds of music from nearby restaurants, and the Calliope playing in the background from the Steamboat Natchez. And end to a great afternoon.
So, whether you live somewhere else, or are a New Orleans native, The Big Easy offers countless opportunities for everyone to be a tourist. I’ve lived in the area my entire life, and everytime I am in the city, whether it be Uptown, Downtown, or somewhere in-between, I always discover something new.
Here a few pictures I took while out and about. Enjoy!!
